Don’t Worry, Be HAPPY!

If someone told you that you could do one thing that would lower your stress level, help with your aches & pains, make you feel strong, flexible and confident, all while adding years onto your life and making you feel HAPPY, would you do it?

Well, it doesn’t come in a magic pill or powder. You can’t pay a million dollars and have someone do it for you.
What is this mysterious, life-changing thing? It’s called YOGA. And EVERYONE can do it. (That’s YOU!)

TOP 10 Benefits of YOGA:

  1. Stress Relief
  2. Pain Relief
  3. Better Breathing
  4. Flexibility
  5. Increased Strength
  6. Weight Management
  7. Improved Circulation
  8. Cardiovascular Conditioning
  9. Focus on the Present (and YOU)
  10. Inner Peace

(Read my previous blog about Yoga, here! It goes into more detail on a few of the above points!)

Everyone has a different reason for practicing yoga. (Or not practicing yoga…) Don’t hold yourself back! It is ONE HOUR of your day and it can drastically improve your mood, recovery from workouts, strength, flexibility and SPIRIT!

Make the extra effort and do something good for YOU! (Be a little selfish!) Join us for Friday Flow @ 6am ($10 drop-in) or find a yoga studio around town that you love. Yoga is important and you don’t know until you try it!

Go get your Flow on!
Much love, Megan

Go With The FLOW!

As many of you know, we have recently added Friday FLOW to our weekly routine! Before now, it had always been offered during BRIK only. So, what’s it all about?

Kaia FLOW is an hour of yoga, every class varying in poses and routine. This style of yoga is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Yoga, which loosely means “breath synchronized with movement.” About.com has a great article about the basics of Vinyasa/FLOW yoga, check it out here!

Why should you FLOW?

Adding yoga to your week of fast-paced, intense workouts is the perfect counterpart to a healthy body and mind. FLOW elongates muscles, helps with soreness and fatigue, is challenging in a different way than a typical Kaia workout, and will have you leaving refreshed (and sweaty!).

The best thing about FLOW (although it’s hard to choose just one thing!) is that it is for EVERYONE. Most people, at one time or another, have said, “I can’t do yoga. I’m not flexible.” Well, guess what?! That’s not what it’s about! Yoga helps with flexibility and strength, but is about much more than that.

FLOW is an hour to take your mind off everything else and focus on how you feel in that very moment. Although we aren’t jumping on boxes or swinging kettlebells, many find yoga to be just as challenging. You ask your body to move and hold poses in new ways for longer amounts of time. You not only work on strength but on balance, flexibility and mental focus.

Do yourself the favor and get out of your comfort zone! Give FLOW a try… I promise your body will thank you for it!

Kaia FLOW – Fridays @ 6am, drop-in $10 ($12 for non-Kaia girls)

Hope to see you tomorrow morning!

Why We FLOW

83 year old yoga instructor!

I find that most Kaia girls feel 1 of 2 ways about Kaia Flow: LOVE it or HATE it.

No matter what your relationship with Flow/Yoga is, it’s important to know why we do it. The following bullet points are inspired by an article, “Why Every Athlete Should Practice Yoga“.

  • Improve Flexibility
  • Prevent Injury/Overcome Injury
  • Range of motion
  • Core and upper body strength

Flexibility: Increased flexibility not only adds to our mobility as we age, but also makes movements in our daily Kaia workouts better. The next time you’re struggling in Warrior 1 think about how it will benefit your squats and lunges!

Injuries: Yoga is known to prevent injuries and that’s every athlete’s worst fear! Maintaining long, lean, flexible muscles helps prevent pulled muscles and acute pains during our workouts. Yoga is also amazing for existing injuries. Modifications may be necessary, but taking the time to stretch, breath and strengthen injured areas is vital to getting back to 100%.

Range of Motion: Trying new and awkward poses, twisting in ways we’d never think possible and holding balancing poses for 10 seconds longer than we’d like all increase our range of motion! Range of motion allows deeper, more efficient movements in your workout & safer and more functional movements in daily life!

Core and Upper Body Strength: These are, without a doubt, the two most targeted areas for women. Our goal sheets are constantly filled with pull-up, push-up and flat tummy goals! Ladies, I cannot tell you how much you will gain in these areas from Flow. Hello, boat pose and chaturanga push-ups! MAKE THEM COUNT.

So, my main point? PRACTICE YOGA. Whether you like it or not. I promise it will grow on you as you progress and find strength and flexibility! When we offer Flow classes or incorporate Flow into a workout, give it everything you’ve got! Find that extra inch, sink a little deeper and breath! The benefits are lifelong.

With lots of yoga love,
Megan

Fun fact: Why is it called FLOW? This is from the idea of Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Vinyasa meaning “breath-synchronized movement.” We go through a ‘vinyasa’ or Flow each time we take a Sun-Salutation, hopefully synchronizing each forward fold, up-dog and down-dog with our breath!
