Today is my favorite day…

Casie + Jane

Just a little note from Casie today about her favorite day of the year :)

Earth Day is one of my favorite holidays.  It reminds me to check in with my life and what is important.  My mom said this weekend, “when you think about how small you are in relation to time and to the universe it really helps you remember what life is about.”  I often look up at the trees and try to take a little snapshot of my life and bring everything back into perspective.

This is a picture of me and my hero, Jane Goodall.  Not only is she kind and humble, but the incredible accomplishments she has achieved in her life are impressive by anyone’s standards.  She travels over 300 days a year sharing her story and inspiring people all over the world to make a difference… and she just celebrated her 79th birthday!  She amazes me as a woman, as an entrepreneur, as an activist, and a mother.

Jane traveled to Africa at the age of 26 years old when traveling to Africa was unheard of for young English women.  She was brave and adventurous.  She had a dream of studying African animals from a very young age.  Without money or without experience set out to the ‘dark continent’ as a secretary for a famous anthropologist, Dr. Louis Leaky.  He saw the potential and fire inside her and gave her a shot to study the wild chimpanzees.

While trekking through the Tanzanian jungle alone following the chimpanzees, she discovered them using a tool to fish termites out of a termite mound.  Back then it was thought that what distinguished man from animal was his use of tools.  She sent a telegram to Dr. Leaky who wrote back, “either we have to redefine tool, redefine Man or accept chimpanzees as human.”

With her ground breaking discovery and every day since Dr. Jane Goodall has been fighting for the chimpanzees.  She has created a program called Roots and Shoots with children in 120 countries to help clean up the environment, she operates a microcredit loan program to help bring money to women in poverty all over the world and help them become educated to support their families, she has created chimpanzee sanctuaries for orphaned animals, has helped protect millions of acres of forest, and works persistently to stop poachers and the use of chimpanzees in laboratories.

Although sometimes it may feel like she is fighting a losing battle, she has a reason for hope.  Just watching her speak in Santa Rosa, having just come from Texas the day before, and going to Washington the day after; she was young and full of life.  She told the story as if it were her first time telling it.  She talked about how many people around the world are working diligently to make the world a better place and how the young people around the world with their huge hopes and dreams make her feel invigorated and give her a reason to keep going.

I try to do a check in once and a while.  Have I been stressing too much about the small stuff?  Have I been indoors too much?  Have I taken the time to appreciate my life, my family, my surroundings?  Usually the answer is no.  Let’s all take some time this week to stop making excuses and make a difference.  Get outside and take a breath of fresh air.  Remember that life is what you make it.

Here are a few things you can do for Earth Day:

  1. Try vegetarian or vegan for a week (here is more info)
  2. Recycle, Reuse, Compost – get creative!
  3. Make a donation to your favorite Earth friendly charity (donate to JGI by clicking here!)
  4. Ride your bike instead of driving, carpool, run errands all on the same day.
  5. Take a stand.  Start your own campaign through a school or your community to help clean up!

I think Jane Goodall is a Kaia Girl at heart…

“If you really want something, and really work hard, and take advantage of opportunities, and never give up, you will find a way.”  Dr. Jane Goodall

Happy Earth Day!

Saturday Super Girls!

* The BRIK girls all together for the Saturday run

It was a beautiful run this morning with a great turn out!!!!

We started by crossing the river through Fair Oaks then we did “Killer Hill Repeats”

Hill repeats are a great way to reach your maximum intensity while sprinting up the hill.  By training yourself to run at your max effort for a short period of time, it will increase your overall endurance significantly.

Post your scores from today on Facebook or to comments.

Great job today!!

Inverted Kaia

* Great job getting high on the wall

Lets face it, walking your feet up on a wall is tough especially for your first couple of attempts.  However, like everything we do here, they get easier.  I’d be lying if I said you will grow to like them, but they do get easier.  This is because we spend so much of our lives upright and holding ourselves upside down is not only foreign, but extremely taxing on our upper body muscles.    The benefits of this simple task are great for in the gym and out of the gym.

Watch Out Week 2!

* Love this workout

Yeah!  We have completed the first week of BRIK!  I really love this time of year.  I remember the first BRIK and how difficult it was to stick to the nutrition plan and make it to the workouts 5 days a week.  But in the end we made it!  When it was over I not only changed my fitness level and my body, but I had a new sense of confidence about myself.  I knew that if I could stick to something for 6 weeks, I could stick to a goal for 6 months or longer?  I guess what I realized was that habits can be broken and I can change my life anytime I want to.  All I had to do was TRY and also make sure I surrounded myself with women with the same interest, the same goals and women I would look up to.

Leave a comment to share who some of the girls you look up to!

Tire Races

* The 9am girls with their “Game Faces” on getting ready for the Tire Races!

On the first day of the BRIK we did a fun competition in teams of 2 flipping tires a set distance.  Strong work to all the girls for keeping proper form and pushing it to the limits.  When flipping over these big tires, remember to keep your back straight, head up and drive your body into the tire while using your biggest muscles… your legs :)

Back To You BRIK!!

“Our mission is to create strong bodies and powerful minds. Working together to get fit, feel great and know that we Kan accomplish anything. Our number one goal is to inspire women to reach beyond what they thought was possible.”
You girls here us preach this to you all the time in class.  I want you to really think about and appriciate yourself for how much better you look and feel…  the next time you are climbing up stairs, or chasing the kids, or even just waking up in the morning.  This next BRIK is all about YOU!
If you haven’t signed up for our next BRIK (Boot Camp) CLICK HERE for more details.

Kaia Kart Wheel

*An amazingly huge beach in Kauai with not a sole around

Just like we do in Kaia, gymnasts train hard in order to maintain their strength, balance and  flexibility.  Whether you are on a sandy beach or grassy yard, by practicing your gymnastic skills you will reap benefits for physical and mental health.  Not to mention how fun cart wheels, summer saults, and hand stands can be!!

The Health Lift

*Kai and Abe doing Dead Lifts

Dead Lifts were formally known as the “Health Lift.”  This is because it works almost every muscle in your body and is completely functional for our day-to-day lives.  Next time you are at the gym with a little extra time, have your coach show you proper form and try a few heavier lifts of only 3 reps at a time.  They will surprise you with a little fun soreness the next day :)
