Running Shoes vs. Workout Shoes

Competitor Magazine Fall Shoe Review

If you just read that title and said to yourself, “Is there a difference?” then this post is for you!

It is common that people don’t realize the importance of having separate shoes for running and working out, so I decided to write this article to give a little insight and advice!

The style of workouts we do at Kaia include a lot of jumping – up & down, side to side, on boxes, to pull up bars, you name it!  We also do a lot of up & down movements (burpees, squat thrusts, etc.) These kind of movements are rough on our shoes and that’s why it’s important to have a good, stable, well-fitting cross-trainer shoe. This shoe should be dedicated to the gym and the gym only.

For running/jogging/walking longer distances (like our Saturday workouts), you should be using a different shoe altogether. Your running shoe should be used ONLY FOR RUNNING to maintain the support it is designed to give. I highly recommend getting fitted for your running shoe because we all have a slightly different gate (running style) and it’s important to get the right shoe for your stride. The folks at Fleet Feet are very good at spending time watching you walk, run and having you try on lots of options to get you in the perfect shoe!

Running shoes can be pricey, but take it from me- it’s well worth it! Last year I made the mistake of over-training in one pair of shoes and ended up with two stress fractures in my right foot. I would have spent hundreds of dollars on a pair of shoes in comparison to my four months of recovery!

So, do yourself the favor and go get some new shoes! It’s a great way to reward yourself for your hard work and keep your feet and knees happy!

No Carbs After Breakfast – Challenge Starts Today!

a98847_0901_quinoagreen_xl

This BRIK, we decided to add an extra challenge to our 6-weeks – NO CARBS AFTER BREAKFAST!

We are all in the mindset to trim down & tone up for Summer and there is no better way of doing that than focusing on nutrition! We know the word “carb” can have a lot of grey areas, so here are the details of our challenge:

  • What are we defining as a “carb”? We are talking about all things starchy and/or processed! For example: Bread, tortillas, chips, rice, potatoes, oats, quinoa, pasta, etc.
  • Why are we going without it after breakfast? Later in the day is when we tend to ‘munch’, mindlessly snack and make bad choices. So we decided, if we are going to have a ‘carb meal’, let’s do it in the morning, make it a healthy choice, and then eat lean & green the rest of the day!
  • What are good carb choices for breakfast? Try steel-cut oats, quinoa w/ fruit, whole wheat cereals, multi-grain toast, or making your own granola! Always stick to whole wheat and organic when possible!

Dying to know what’s in the picture? Those are Quinoa Spinach Bakes! You can find the recipe here, along with 9 other quinoa breakfast ideas!

As with all of our challenges, if you slip up one day, don’t let it throw you off track for the entire session! Learn from it, let it go, and get back on track the next day! You kan do it!!

Kaia Handbags!

405815_10151375176362181_1587205804_n

Kaia handbags are a staple in Kaia FIT gyms… Made of sand, a garbage bag, and duct tape, these simple weights step up any exercise and are pretty cute too!

Each summer BRIK, we offer the supplies for our Kaia girls to make their very own handbag! If you missed our handbag making party last week, grab the supplies from the gym, buy some cute duct tape, watch this how-to videoand get to work!!

We want everyone to have their own handbag made by the beginning of Week 3… There might just be a fun workout in store that includes some punishment for not having your own bag! :)

If you have ANY questions, please let us know by emailing kaiafitsacramento@hotmail.com.

Happy duct-taping!!

Comfort Zones

comfortzone

Comfort zones exist for a reason… Because they’re comfortable!

Of course it’s easiest to sleep in a little later or go straight home after work. Of course it’s easiest to run through a drive-thru or order take-out. Of course it’s easiest to open a can of soda rather than make yourself a smoothie…

But it’s not easy to feel unhealthy, out of shape, tired, self-conscious and frustrated. It’s not easy to start a fitness routine after years out of the gym. It’s not easy to prepare all your meals from real foods and prep healthy snacks for the week. But these are the decisions that really matter… The extra time spent in the gym and the kitchen aren’t just good for you, they’re life saving

Whether you’ve been a Kaia girl for years, just started, or are thinking about joining, NOW is the time to get out of those comfort zones and make a positive change for the long-term. Even if you’ve been coming to Kaia for a while, we all have our little comfort zones we rely on- Happy Hour Thursdays… Pizza Fridays… Brunch and mimosas on Sundays… It doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy these things once in a while, but the question is- Are they a treat or a routine we’re not willing to break?

We have just kicked off our “Summer Survivor” BRIK session. This is the perfect time to stop making excuses and try new things. Try getting up a little earlier, try drinking a little more water, try pushing a little harder during your workouts… Regardless of what you choose to work on this session, it’s time to get out of our comfort zones!!

Rely on each other and your coaches to make this the best summer yet! Ask questions, give it your best effort, and go for it!!

“I have never been great at sports.  Most people called me clumsy, uncoordinated, or just plain not good enough.  My parents tried to put me in sports but it wasn’t until my Gramps looked at my mom and told her to let me pursue what I was good at.  That was singing, dancing, and acting.  So, I was placed in ballet at the age of 5 years old.  I was active in my childhood by having play/dance classes at least 2 times a week or more as well as running track and playing volleyball in junior high and one year of high school.
When I reached my senior year of high school I was diagnosed with depression.  I was on my way to college with a scholarship in vocal performance.  I should have been excited.  Instead I had become dependent on certain people and ate excessively.   That was the first time I reached a size 12.  I had always been a size 6-8.  I decided to lose some weight before college-  I lost 25 pounds.  This was the first start to my yo-yo diets.
I was able to stay this size for another year.  Then, it was me against the world.  My parents moved to Sacramento after my dad got a new job.  Parents gone + college (Chico State) = party time.  Party time turned into 50lbs.   I will never forget the first time I stepped on the scale and saw 200lbs for the first time.
After two years of being away, I decided to move to Sacramento to be closer to my family and moved back in with my parents.  My sister helped me get a gym membership to California Family Fitness.  My parents put me on a diet and I enrolled myself in cardio kickboxing at American River College.  I was able to lose the 50lbs.
I was able to maintain that weight for about another year and half. During that time I had met someone and our relationship became serious.  After a year and half I got comfortable, as people call it.  I just started packing the pounds back on.  Before I knew it I hit a new weight I had never seen before.  220.
It was 2008 and I was graduating from Sac State.  I lost 35lbs in two months.  I did what they call the “Biggest Loser Diet.”  Because I went so hard-core for a short amount of time I never really knew about nutrition.  I just thought it was eating brown rice, wheat bread, chicken and veggies.  That got really boring to eat…  I got off the diet and ate.  Ate and ate and ate.
Then, my world was all about to change.
That next year I lost my Grandma, my Gramps, and my parents decided to divorce.  So, the only way I knew how to cope was to cry and eat.  My relationship with my boyfriend would turn to bad to worse.  I would then escalate to the largest size I have ever been- 260lbs and a size 18.
In 2011, I decided to start a new life for myself.  I became a single woman, moved out with my dog (Phebe), and lived by myself for the first time.  I walked away from a life of seven years- friendships and all.  I knew this time would be lonely, but I decided to get my life back.  Time to lose this weight for once and for all and learn how to successfully change my lifestyle. I lost 45lbs by starting to eat healthy and run at the gym about 3 times a week (the stress of my break-up helped too).  In about a year I dropped to a size 12/14.
Then, I met someone…  Let me tell you!  I have never met someone in my whole life that has pushed me to be the best person I can be.  Before I knew it I lost 10lbs and I was breaking my dependency problem I always had.  I was starting to live for me, do my own thing and have someone special there too.  It was all coming together.  Soon enough I would find out he would continue to push me and support me to a new level.  I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for me; he has helped me be my own person.
Now it’s October of 2012.  I was sitting on the couch looking at a Groupon for $30 for an all women’s boot camp.  I said, ‘I have never heard of Kaia before, but I am going to give this a try. I have lost 55lbs so far and I want to lose another 45lbs to hit that 100lb weight loss!’
So, Kaia FIT’s Core session started.  I was nervous.  I was afraid.  I didn’t know what to expect.
I did my first workout and loved it!  I was sore after every workout that session, but I was motivated to become a better person.  I had never worked out with women so supportive and I made friends so fast.  Having my buddy Emily (who I just met)  made the biggest difference in the world.   The ongoing support I received from my Coaches, Megan and Ashley, is something I will never forget.  They both took me under their wing and helped me get ready for my next challenge- BRIK. I finished that CORE Session losing 10lbs.
BRIK began.  This time I was nervous. My buddy Emily and I got separated into different class times (we reunited the next FIT session!).  I remember that first day like it was yesterday.  Coach Megan said, “Get a partner.”  I didn’t see her name I just picked the girl with the pink leggings and the all pink outfit (pink is my favorite color).  The girl was loud and outgoing,  just like me.  This person would become my true mentor- Lisa Picarello.  She helped introduce me to the other girls and started to provide me with nutrition advice and became a true inspirational friend.  I was getting educated, working out and making new friends in the process.  BRIK was a success!  I lost another 10lbs, making it to 75lbs of total weight lost (20lbs lost with Kaia).    At the end of BRIK I was awarded the Goal Setter Award.  This award was given to me for running a 8:25 minute mile (goal was to run it in 10 minutes) and to eventually reach a 100lb weight loss.
I have continued on and I love the support of all my coaches and all the girls in my 6pm class. This week marks the end of my first FIT session.  I am proud to say I have dropped another 6lbs and am currently a size 10! This equals 81lbs lost!
I am making lifelong changes and friendships.  I cannot express how Kaia is not just about losing weight.  It builds your confidence, makes you stronger, healthier, keeps the weight off, and you gain some true friends along the way. My life is forever changed and I thank all of you that have helped and supported me.  Lastly, thank you to my parents, my siblings, other extended family, James and my friends who have always stuck by me and have supported me through this journey.  I could not express my love and gratitude to you all.
KAIA ROCKS!”
Thank you, Rachael, for sharing you’re AMAZING story! We can’t wait to celebrate with you when you hit that 100 pound mark!!! -Your Kaia Krew

Kaia Girl Profile: Ashly Vicini

“Where do I even begin?

Like many of us, I’ve struggled with my weight for my entire life. I grew up with athletic asthma, which prevented me from participating in a lot of sports. Through my later years of high school and early years of college, I just started packing on the weight. During the summer of 2008, I returned from living in Europe for six months, where I literally ate my way through Italy, Greece, Spain, etc.  That summer I peaked at my highest weight of about 215 pounds. You could only imagine the toll my weight took on me emotionally and physically.

For the next couple of years, I would make a small lifestyle change, lose a little bit of weight and then maintain that weight. Then there would be another small lifestyle change, I’d lose a little more weight and maintain. This “slow but steady” process worked for me because it seemed like a healthier route and it didn’t require me to work my butt off in a gym.

When my cousin asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding in October of 2011, I decided that I had to start exercising. For 3-4 months before the wedding, I worked with a personal trainer. It was a 2 to 1 situation, and the other lady working out with us had major modifications to exercises. Unfortunately, the program created for us did not work for me. I found that I wasn’t really physically challenged or pushed to my limit. Needless to say, my results were very disappointing and after the wedding I cancelled my training sessions.

In February of last year, my friend and co-worker, Lisa Picarello, started talking about KAIA. She signed up for a FIT session and immediately started drinking the KAIA Kool-Aid. She was so inspiring and motivating, that she convinced me to join her on the next FIT session (which started a year ago this week). I showed up for my first class, not really knowing what to expect and seriously struggled through the workout. I felt so out of shape and was so discouraged, but each day for those five weeks I showed up and gave it my best effort.

Everyone went on to start BRIK, but life got in the way and I choose not to participate for a variety of reasons. Instead I bought myself a membership at Crunch and decided that I was going to go to the gym a few times a week. Yet again, I had a million excuses not to workout. You know that saying “If it’s important to you, you’ll find a way. If it’s not, you’ll find an excuse.” Well that was me – I simply didn’t make exercising a priority in my life.

In May I turned 25 and decided that it was going to be the best year of my life. My goal was to seek new experiences and new adventures. I became more active and found enjoyment in hiking. Then sometime in early fall, I had an epiphany that in order to live the best life I could live, I would have to do everything in my power now to ensure that I could live the life I wanted in the future. My health finally became a top priority in my life. In August 2012, I decided to autoenroll at KAIA Fit Sacramento in time for the “Kombat” BRIK Session.

My first BRIK was an amazing experience; the support from the other girls and the coaching staff was so appreciated. In those six weeks I lost about 7 pounds. Although I didn’t lose much in inches I still felt a shift in my body and I gained muscle. That session I improved in my workouts, but slacked with my nutrition.

In my second BRIK, I had a completely different experience. My focus shifted from the workouts to my nutrition. I followed the nutrition guidelines with 90% accuracy for those six weeks. And, due to another large commitment and a nasty sinus infection, I missed a good handful of workouts. This was truly a huge testament to how much nutrition plays a part in weight loss. I’m proud to say that in the “Rock Your Life” BRIK Session I lost 15 pounds and inches all over the place.

In the last seven months, I have lost 25 pounds, and have gained strength and confidence. I have seen improvements in my workouts, in my endurance, and in my energy. I can honestly say that I’ve never felt so happy and healthy in my entire life. Last week I made the decision to participate in my first half marathon by my 26th Birthday. For seven weeks, that will be my main focus as I train for the American Parkway Half Marathon on May 4th!

I officially drank the KAIA Kool-aid and cannot imagine life without it. I truly love everything about it. I love that each class is different; it constantly keeps your body guessing. I love Balance, Strength, and KAIA; it allows you to make progress within each specific exercise. I love the coaching staff; they give encouragement not to give up and extra support beyond the workouts. I love the KAIA sisterhood; the collaboration, words of wisdom, celebrations, recipes, and encouragement that is shared on Facebook. I love the 6pmers; who I get to workout side by side with and who motivate me to strive for greatness.

I mostly love that KAIA has not only contributed to making “25” the best year of my life, but it’s laid the foundation to have the best healthiest life I can live!”

Thank you, Ashly, for sharing your incredible story! You are an amazing & inspirational part of our Kaia family! Can’t wait to see you rock that half-marathon!!

The Joy of Running

524304_426737647367864_1041919749_n

Did you just laugh? Or roll your eyes at the title of this post?

Without a doubt, running is the least-liked thing in the gym, always. But I’m here to tell you all of the reasons you should find joy in running!!

  1. It’s good for you physically!
-Running helps strengthen your bones (really important for women!)
-It helps you lose and manage weight
-Burns more calories than almost any other exercise!
  2. It’s good for you mentally!
    -
Running gives you the opportunity to clear your head, process, and release stress
    -It gives you YOU time!
  3. It gets you outside.
-Rain or shine, it’s good for us to get outside and breath the fresh air!
-Running let’s us get a little dirty, wet, and sweaty!
  4. It’s a great way to get together with friends.
-Life is busy… Running is a healthy way to catch up with your girlfriends!
-Set a weekly running ‘date’ with a friend, it will keep you accountable!

Before you know it, you’ll start to love running! (And if not love, at least like!) The hardest step is the first one. Get yourself out the door and hit the pavement! Running is a great way to stay in shape and get yourself off the couch!

Find your joy in running!

New to running? Start with walking and work up to jogging/walking intervals. Before you know it, you’ll be running without stopping!

Approaching HALF-WAY!

exercise-motivation-required

Today marks the start of Week 3 of our 6-week BRIK. Time flies when you’re eating clean, working out hard, and having FUN!

At the end of this week, we will be doing our mid-way Assessments (weigh-in & measurements), mid-way Goals, and mid-way Fit Test… Are you ready?!

On Day 1 of any session or new fitness routine we are all motivated and determined. But, it’s easy for life to get in the way, our schedules to get busy, and our fitness commitment to start taking the backseat. Don’t be a victim to the mid-way funk! We still have 4 weeks of BRIK to go and NOW is the time to step it up!

If you haven’t been eating perfectly or have missed some classes, don’t let that be an excuse for falling off the wagon! Get your booty into the gym and clean out those cabinets! It’s Week 3, time for a fresh start!

If you’ve been rockin‘ weeks 1 & 2, keep it up!! Be proud to step on that scale on Friday, knowing that a lot can happen in a few weeks!

Keep up the hard work, Kaia Girls! Happy Week 3!

10 TIPS FOR THE KAIA GIRL

482137_430776743630621_53330024_n

It’s a new year and many of us are ready for the fresh start. We are starting a new BRIK (6 week boot camp) session on Monday… Being prepared and motivated is essential!

Whether you’ve been coming to Kaia FIT for years or are brand new, I’ve provided the following 10 tips for getting in the Kaia mindset for 2013!

1. FOOD IS MORE THAN HALF THE BATTLE.
Sometimes I wish this wasn’t the case… Sometimes I wish I could just workout really hard, do double days, and then eat anything I desired. But, that’s not the way it works. It’s time to view yourself as a machine. The best ones need the best fuel. Think of yourself as a Ferrari, NOT a rusty, broken down pick-up. You require premium fuel to perform at your best. Put junk in, that’s exactly what you’ll get out. Put in the good stuff and you’ll have great workouts and see results in your strength & performance.

2. IT DOESN’T GET EASIER, YOU JUST GET BETTER.
At Kaia, we never want your workouts to be easy. It’s simply not the goal. The goal is that you are always challenged, week after week, month after month. For our Kaia vets, make sure you’re challenging yourself in every workout, pushing your limits and feeling sore, not just going through the motions! It’s a new year… Time to pick up the heavier Kettlebell, jump on the bigger box, and run a little faster! For our new Kaia girls, remember that we all had our own Day 1. We all felt like we weren’t going to make it through the first week and went home completely overwhelmed. STICK WITH IT. You will be astonished at how fast you gain strength and start enjoying the feeling of a tough workout!

3. BALANCE, STRENGTH, & KAIA!
At Kaia, we have three levels for every exercise. Balance = Low Impact/Modified, Strength = Medium Impact, Kaia = High Impact. These levels exist because we ALL need them. It is vital to remember the importance of these levels and that they exist for a reason. Listen to your body and step it down to Strength or Balance when you need it. On the other hand, push your limits, get out of your comfort zone, and try things in Strength and Kaia everyday. Always ask your coach for help and modifications when you need it!

4. THE NUMBER ON THE SCALE IS NOT EVERYTHING.
We are women and the scale is no one’s best friend. Although weight-loss is a natural part of the process, it’s not our only focus. Nor is it our main focus. We want you to be HEALTHY – eating right, feeling better & having more energy. We want you to be STRONG – feeling confident, having a better range of motion, & learning functional movements. When you focus on working hard during the workouts and eating right everyday, weight loss will be a byproduct of those choices. Take your focus off the scale and results will naturally come.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID OF TRYING NEW THINGS.
Conquer your fears! It is an indescribable feeling when you do something you never thought possible. When you accomplish something out of your comfort zone, it starts a trend… A trend where you realize you ARE capable of anything and if you set your mind to it, you can (and will) accomplish it! Here are some ideas: Handstands, climbing the rope, pull-ups, running a specific distance (5k, 10k, half-marathon…), box jumps. Don’t be afraid to ask your coach for help, that’s what we’re here for!

6. ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY.
Patience is a virtue when it comes to fitness results. Don’t expect to reach all of your goals overnight… These things take time and it’s important to stay focused throughout the journey. We are all SO motivated and excited on Day 1, but it’s easy to let life get in the way and to lose our determination. Be honest with yourself and your goals, knowing it might take some time. But with hard work and an unshakable commitment, you will reach them! We promise!

7. IT’S YOU AND YOUR MAT.
Don’t worry about anyone else in the room. It’s fun to be a little competitive and it’s natural to be motivated by the other girls in your class… But it’s also easy to get caught up in your head about what you can’t do. Guess what? It doesn’t matter! All that matters is that you are doing your best. Stay focused on what you can do and the progress you’re making. We are all here for each other… Every age, shape, size and fitness level!

8. TAKE REST DAYS.
For those of you that are brand new to Kaia, you might have rolled your eyes at this one, thinking “Duh! I love rest days!” But something kind of magical tends to happen after some time at Kaia… You start to dread  your off days. You start signing up for races, Tough Mudders, yoga classes, etc. and you pack your off days from Kaia with other commitments. On one hand, this is AMAZING and I’m always so proud of the multi-tasking athletes in our gym. On the other hand, rest is just as important as working out. There is a quote about weight lifting that I love… “You don’t get bigger and stronger from lifting weights, you get bigger and stronger from recovering from lifting weights.” Although weight lifting is not our focus at Kaia, this idea still applies. You do not get stronger, faster, and more fit by working out 7 days a week. You get stronger, faster, and more fit by working out hard and then letting your body heal, recover, and REBUILD stronger muscles. Respect rest and enjoy it at least 1 day per week.

9. ASK QUESTIONS!
Never, ever hesitate to ask questions or ask for help. It’s easy to feel lost or behind when you start… Always ask for guidance when  you need it! Coaches and KAT Girls (Kaia vets who have volunteered to be extra helpers in class) are there for you no matter what. There are no stupid questions. If you forget the answer, ask again. Whether your questions are about the workouts, nutrition, or anything else, we are here for you. Asking questions leads to learning, so ask! (You too, Kaia Vets!)

10. HAVE FUN!
Getting in the Kaia spirit makes working out something you look forward to! Get to know the girls in your class (they’ll hold you accountable!), share recipes and ideas on Facebook, attend our BRIK party (February 16th!) and enjoy the journey! By the way, a few ‘spirit days’ might be coming your way… Don’t be too proud to workout in a silly outfit! It’s good for your soul!

See you all on Monday!
Love, Megan

Kaia Girl Profile: Ramona Marzion

“Before”

“After” Ramona M., the triathlete!

Another beautiful testimonial by one of our Kaia girls! Thank you, Ramona, for sharing and being an inspiration to us all!!

“Prior to joining Kaia… I was bored. I had all these great hobbies that I hadn’t participated in for years because I was too out of shape to really enjoy them. A few years prior had been spent traveling (and eating my way through) the world and living in Boston where I was still out exploring every day. Life was grand! Fast forward and I’m back in Sacramento, a standard 8-5 job, in a relationship that left much to desire, and I somehow settled into this lazy, monotonous lifestyle where the weight just piled on. I knew I was in a rut and looking for something to change but couldn’t decide what to do. Changing the boy and the job was easy but the gym was boring. I had a bit of motivation going to make a change, but somehow happy hours, or long party weekends could kill any motivation to stay active. I was clearly having a good time but I had lost the competitive, athletic side that kept me active and full of energy.

So in December when some random lady (sorry El, I had yet to realize your amazingness) at work sent out an email to a listing of women to check out this all women’s boot camp my curiosity was peaked. Well, first I grumbled about all the emails you get at work for fundraisers, people selling things, and all that jazz. But as I watched all these women reply that they would think about it or of course they would join, I started to give it some more thought. I emailed El back and asked how I could go about trying it out; that by far has been the most important email I have received or sent in the past year.

I went to my first trial workout in the dark at 5am!!!  Yikes. I was sore, exhausted, sweaty, and completely happy!! I felt completely challenged, completely out of shape, and totally addicted to the feeling from such a great workout. I immediately signed up for the monthly plan and the next session which happened to be BRIK. During the first six weeks, I dropped 18 pounds and felt amazing. I was surprised at how easy it was, all I had to do was follow the directions and watch the program work.  My body felt clean and I had more energy than I had in a long time.

I am now about to finish my 3rd BRIK, completed my first triathlon, and feel absolutely amazing. Physically and mentally, I feel unbelievably strong. My outlook on exercise and food has completely changed.

Throughout the past year, I have never felt hungry or restricted in my eating habits. The nutrition plan is simple, eat real food that tastes good. I’m not sitting around munching on rice cakes and celery. I love that Kaia provides such a great manual with ideas, grocery lists, and keeps me accountable.

The workouts are fun, always challenging, and the best part is someone else has already planned them out. I show up and someone tells me what to do every workout. Hello, EASY! The atmosphere at the gym is amazing. For one hour a day, a group of great women all on their own journey get together and play as a team. One hour free from diapers, work assignments, bills, or whatever occupies the other 23 hours of the day. It is our time to focus solely on ourselves and enjoy the company of other women.

I love Kaia! The workouts, the women, the feeling of success after each challenge. They all combine to make Kaia the best part of my day.”

Oh yeah… Why I love Kaia by the numbers!
