“Bad Decision”

"Bad Decision" makers! Becca, Megan, Raina and Amber (Megan R. and Sharon are missing from this photo!)

Six Kaia girls attempted the “Bad Decision” workout on Sunday, myself included. The name says it all, it was TOUGH!

The Workout:

1 mile car push (advice: use the Prius or other car weighing about the same!)
1 mile run
1/2 mile farmer’s carry with 1/2 your body weight
7 rope climbs
As many burpees as you weigh
-
I don’t want to sugar-coat it, this workout is not for everyone. It’s as tough mentally as it is physically and took most of us 1:30-2:00. Many of the girls subbed out pulls-ups (as many as you weigh) for some or all of the rope climbs. It’s a great way to give the challenge a shot in a ‘scaled’ version. And Megan R., Amber L., and Sharon C., I can’t wait to see you do it again WITH all the rope climbs! Good 2012 goal, eh? You all did so awesome! GO US! And thank you SO much to all the supporters, your cheerleading was appreciated… and necessary!!

Many of you have asked about having another day set-up to try this workout and I’d love to arrange it (as a spectator this time!!). I will talk to Casie and Abe and keep you posted!

In the meantime, PRACTICE THOSE ROPE CLIMBS! They are all about technique. We would love to help you with it! Instructional video coming soon!

The Excuse Book

We’ve all heard them. The long stories, the bad rationalizations, EVERY EXCUSE IN THE BOOK.
Here are some of the most common excuses when it comes to working out and my (very loving) responses to them in italics!

TOP 10 Excuses Not to Exercise (from US News-Health):

  1.  I’m too busy.  We are all busy. But we all manage to make time for our favorite TV show, a manicure or lunch with friends, so make fitness high on the priority list as well! It is amazing what we FIND time for when we make it important. Once it’s a habit, you won’t be able to imagine your busy day without it!!
  2. I’m too old. No way! Fitness is for every age! Our Kaia girls range from 20-65+ and every one gets a good workout. There are always modifications and exercising will only make you feel stronger and more energetic as you age!
  3. I hate doing it alone. Well, that’s one of the best things about Kaia- you are never alone! This is your team and family and we are here for you everyday!!
  4. It’s so boring.  This simply just doesn’t apply to Kaia. :)
  5. My kids get in the way. I know this one is huge for many Kaia moms but we also have some incredible examples of how to make it work. Many, if not most, of our 5 & 6 a.m. ladies are moms and rush out to get their kids to school after they get their workout in! It’s hard juggling it all, but taking care of mommy is just as important as taking care of the kids!
  6. My back hurts. Chronic back pain is something we hear a lot about, from every age and weight. Taking it slow and making modifications is key to staying injury free. But so is WORKING OUT. Staying inactive will make these aches & pains chronic and worse as time goes on!
  7. I’m too fat. Many women join Kaia with large weight-loss goals. The hardest part is starting, but you will be glad you did. NOW is the time to turn your life and habits around.
  8. I’m thin already. I may have been the inventor of this one! But as we all know, SKINNY DOESN’T EQUAL STRONG (or healthy!). Focus on being active, capable, strong and healthy- it’s not all about the pounds on the scale.
  9. I’m not a ‘gym rat’. Thankfully, you don’t have to be at Kaia. No treadmills, grunting men or dirty locker rooms in site! You just have to be the wonderful woman that you are and get yourself through that door! We’ll do the rest. And, on Saturdays, you get to experience various parks of Sacramento!
  10. I have arthritis. It is not surprising that this made the Top 10 list. It’s a serious problem that effects so many. Although the process will be gradual and working out will be tough at first, it will HELP in the long run. Maintaining mobility, flexibility and strength are the best ways to help prevent arthritis from getting worse and many experience relief  from their symptoms!
-
So, the moral of the story? NO EXCUSES! Stay ACTIVE ladies! There is no excuse big enough or creative enough. Staying strong, mobile and active are important for every single person on the planet.

With lots of love!
Megan

TRUE GRIT

True Grit. No, I’m not talking about the movie… I’m talking about YOU.

In the midst of Week 4 I have witnessed something incredible. Something so deep, raw and amazing I had a hard time describing it. And then I realized the word I was looking for- GRIT.

Grit; noun
definition: firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage
synonyms: backbone, courage, determination, firmness, fortitude, guts, moral fiber, nerve, resolution, resolve, spunk, stamina, steadfastness, tenacity, toughness, will, willpower

LOOK AT THOSE SYNONYMS!! I see every single one of those things in the gym everyday. I look around and see it in your movements, your faces, and your relentless nature. I came in on Monday and realized I wasn’t alone in my soreness, tiredness and general blah-ness… It’s been a tough few weeks! And then the workout started and everyone’s spirit made a complete 180. There they were- the smiles, grunts, groans, and laughs I needed.

You, Kaia women, are absolutely amazing. You encourage me everyday to be better, stronger, and grittier!
Thank you for your hardcore determination, willpower and courage to keep going! Let’s kick the rest of this Brik’s butt!!

SHOUT OUT!!

52 Kaia girls that I like to call, "Team Rain or Shine"

I have to give a HUGE shout out to so many of you (but this was especially inspired by the 7 a.m. class)…
Your FORM is aaaaamazing!!!

As a coach, it’s such a proud moment to look around a room half-way through a tough workout and see every single girl doing the exercise with proper form. Whether in Balance, Strength or Kaia, form is the most important piece for success! And it seems like many of you realize that! Keep up the great work!!

Also, a big shout out to the fifty-two amazing Kaia girls that showed up at Land Park this past Saturday for a surprisingly dry run! Way to stay committed, regardless of  the potentially bad weather!!

All of you are looking strong and determined  as we begin Week 4 and I couldn’t have more respect and love for all of you! You are all AWESOME for coming this far. I can’t wait to see how much more progress you make in the 2nd half of BRIK!

Stay COMMITTED, DRIVEN, and PASSIONATE – it will all be worth it!

Much love,
Megan

TRX, baby!

April, Raina and I spent all day Sunday at Kaia F.I.T. Carson City becoming TRX certified. TRX is the company that invented those large suspension trainers (straps) that hang from the ceiling. We use them periodically in our workouts, but after Sunday I think you’ll be seeing a whole lot more of it!

They are a unique, fun and challenging way to work the body and we learned some pretty awesome stuff to do with them!

If you’re looking to improve on your squats, push-ups, planks, handstands and just about anything else, TRX can help! It’s a great workout and allows you to do things with your body you would have never thought possible.

To watch some cool videos, go here. <–She was our trainer on Sunday!! I especially love the video, “TRXTop10WinterExercises.”

We can’t wait to share some of our new knowledge with you and play around with the suspension trainers!! Just give us a few days to recover, we’re pretty sore…

HAPPY WEEK 4!

Let’s DO this!

Claudia showin' her spirit!

Tomorrow marks our official HALF-WAY point of the Resolution BRIK. Woo-hoo!

With that in mind, be sure to come out for our run at William Land Park!! It ends our “Spirit Week”, as I’ve been calling it, so GO ALL OUT! Let’s get funky and run in our brightest, flashiest, tackiest gear!

I know what you’re thinking, “But it’s going to be raaaiiining...” NO EXCUSES! It’s fun to get a little wet! Plus, when it’s raining it’s actually warmer than it’s been the last two weekends. You will feel so much better after a nice walk/run with your Kaia sisters and you’ll be wrapping up Week 3 as committed as you began!

So, I can’t wait to see all of you tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. at William Land Park. Layer up and park at Fairy Tale Town!

Kaia Girl Profile: Jama Myers

Jama at Kaia FIT Sacramento's 5k Resolution Run

Jama is an inspirational example of how Kaia FIT can really change lives. She was kind enough to put her story in her own words and I’m sure you will enjoy reading about her journey as much as I did!

“I started Kaia FIT in June 2011. I was roped into it by Kaia-girl cutie Kim Dunlap. Kim and I work together, and she was always telling me about these crazy workouts that she was doing and telling me how much I would love it. I initially thought she was insane, but after watching her for a couple of weeks and seeing how much more streamlined, toned and generally healthy-looking she was getting, I knew that whatever she was doing, was what I wanted to do!
When I first walked in the door of Kaia I was the most heavy I had been in my entire life, I was a total couch potato, and so addicted to sugar I was practically snorting it! The first person I met was Casie, and when I introduced myself, she was so welcoming that it immediately felt like I had known her my entire life. That was honestly the first thing that impressed me the most about Kaia, the genuine care and concern that each of the coaches showed to each person. They were ready from day one to celebrate our victories, and help us where we were struggling. I desperately needed someone to be on my team, because I had begun to not root for myself anymore.

The first two weeks were so hard, between detoxing, sweating, being sore, and generally moving my body in ways it had not moved in twenty years! And to add on top of that, in my personal life I was going to class to get my real estate license while working full-time. So, by the beginning of the second week, after what I felt like was a terrible workout performance, I got in my car and cried all the way home! The next day I talked to the coaches and they said that was actually a pretty normal side effect of the detox and that if I could work through it, I would come out on the other side much stronger. That afternoon at the end of the session Coach April gave us the most inspiring encouragement I had ever heard. She talked about “letting it go”. This meant to stop thinking about what I wanted to look like at the end of the session, or how much I wanted to weigh. I had to focus on each day, each workout, each squat thrust, each breath, until everything else was out of my mind. This was so empowering to me! It also meant that if I had a crappy workout one day, it had no bearing on the next workout. I could start each workout fresh and not undo any of the progress that I had already made. And the best part was that I was building confidence in myself, and beginning to root for myself again – GO ME!

So, now each time that I work out, I pour myself into it, and challenge myself to do things that I have not done before. Sometimes that simply means just doing a couple of reps in “Kaia”, or sometimes it means climbing a wall backwards until I am in handstand, or participating in the Resolution Run. Someday I will climb that terrifying rope that hangs in the gym, but probably not today. After all, a girl needs a goal to work toward!

In the meantime, I have been at Kaia for every session since June 2011. I totally aced my real estate exam, I lost over 30 pounds, and have gone down from a size 16 to a size 10! I have taken the care and concern that I was shown by the coaches, and I really try to give that in turn to the other beautiful Kaia girls sweating it out next to me. I have met some really awesome ladies these last seven months, and although they may not know it, they have given me encouragement and strength as I watch them struggle and fight and prevail. This is something that I know I cannot do on my own, but with the support of such a strong army of women beside me, I cannot think of anything else that I would rather be doing!”

-

Thank you so much for sharing, Jama! We are so happy to have you as a part of our Kaia family and look forward to sharing in your future successes, including climbing that rope!

DETOX Diary (Week 3)

This week is about finding balance.

The first week of BRIK I went without so many things, eating really clean and strict. I went through a lot of feelings, physically and emotionally, but I felt good overall.
The second week was a bit more disastrous. I had a hard time allowing just a little back into my diet. I took a 3-day trip out of town where I completely blew it. But, when I got back I realized something- I need to live with moderation.

So, it’s WEEK 3 (already!). What now?
I have decided that I need to pick and choose my battles. And, I assume, so do you. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What food(s) makes me feel energetic after I eat it?
  2. What food(s) makes me feel lethargic after I eat it?
  3. What do I eat that makes me feel great during a workout?
  4. What are my guilty pleasures and how often do I “cheat”?
  5. Outside of a strict detox, how can I really commit to eating, as a lifestyle?

Here are my answers.

  1. I feel the best after eating big salads, fruit, eggs and lean meat.
  2. I feel bloated and gross after eating too much bread, pasta, cheese, potatoes and nuts.
  3. I feel the best during a workout if I’ve had a green smoothie and water.
  4. I love ice cream, pizza and cocktails. I cheat too often and think I should only allow a guilty pleasure once a week.
  5. I think I can live most of the time without much dairy, gluten/starchy carbs and moderate sweets and alcohol. I can commit to eating lots of veggies and fruits and making my daily habits revolve around healthy meals.

I would love to hear your responses to these questions! Please post to comments!

Running Your Waistline OFF!

60 Sacramento Kaia girls at dawn getting ready to run!

We have had AMAZING turn-outs at our Saturday runs this Brik! Thank you for your commitment to this very important day of your training, keep it up!! And, if you’ve missed out on a Saturday or two, vow to make it to the next one. You won’t regret it!

And here’s why:

  1. LOSE WEIGHT- Running is one of the most effective ways to burn calories! You’re literally running your waistline off!
  2. PREVENT DISEASE- Running has been linked to boosting your immune system, creating healthier lungs, preventing blood clots and decreasing the risk of breast cancer (information from active.com).
  3. MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER- Running reduces stress and relieves depression. It might be the hardest thing to get out the door and do when you’re stressed or depressed, but it is a great way to clear the mind and think things through.
  4. STRENGTH & ENDURANCE- Kaia workouts and running work perfectly together. Combining cross-training and running are a harmonious relationship because of increased strength and endurance, making you better at both forms of exercise.

Saturday mornings are truly a unique day in the Kaia training program. You get to meet other Kaia girls from classes you don’t usually attend, be surrounded by the best support group in Sacramento and start your weekend off right! Whether you’re a runner, jogger or walker, Saturdays are important! And, I promise, FUN!

Thanks again to all in attendance at McKinley this past weekend. We will see you this Saturday at William Land Park!

Are You Eating Enough?

This is important, so pay attention!
Make sure you are eating ENOUGH caloriesFOOD IS FUEL… So Fill Up Your Tank!

As women, all working towards health and fitness goals, hitting it hard for the new year, we tend to think about cutting calories. And, for some of us, that might be necessary. For large weight-loss goals or if your daily intake has been extraordinarily high, then yes, cut some calories.

But, from what I’ve noticed (especially during detox), when we start eating really clean, cutting starchy carbs and sweets, our daily calorie intake tends to be too low. Many food journals I’ve seen have had days at 600-800 calories. Plain and simple, this is not enough food!!

You are a Kaia girl. You are active and training hard 5 days a week. You must FUEL this athletic lifestyle. It might be new to you or it might be your first time following our nutrition plan, so adjustment will take time. But it is essential that you do not starve yourself of necessary nutrition- and enough of it!

At Kaia, we suggest aiming for 1200 calories per day. This is not an exact number and it will vary from person to person, but it’s a good starting point. When eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, this might seem like a big task. You might feel like you eat smoothies and salads all day and can never reach 1000 calories.
Here are some suggestions for adding healthy calories to your daily intake:

  • Nuts & seeds/Almond butter
  • Avocado
  • Almond or soy milk
  • Eggs/egg whites
  • Olive oil
  • Fish
  • Oats

If you are feeling weak during workouts or feeling hungry all of the time, don’t be afraid to eat. Listen to your body.

On the other hand, when you’re full and satisfied, know when to stop eating. It’s a balance and something that takes time to get the hang of. As always, please feel free to ask any Kaia Coach for help! That’s what we’re here for!

Guest Post! Author: Megan Rolleri

Megan Rolleri, her husband Danny and their three children.

Written with Kaia Moms in mind.
“I was sitting in the play area at the Galleria this weekend and was noticing the amount of out of shape moms. Not to just harp on moms because, in general, more people seem to be out of shape than in shape, but I’m going to focus on moms because we seem to have a get out of jail free card.

I started to think to myself… THIS IS BULL$%&T! As mothers, we are told, “You’ll lose that weight eventually”, “Don’t feel bad, you have a baby to take care of”, “You’re tired and doing the best you can”, ” Well she has kids, so what do you expect?” We are too tired, too stressed, too busy, and too wiped out to stay active and in shape. For a fact, we are all of those things and more. Believe me, I know. But boy do we jump on that “I’m a Mom” excuse train and ride it waaay to long. We are constantly given tickets to ride that train by friends, family and society. They all mean well but it’s time to WOMAN up!! We have the strength, ability and courage not only to hand our bodies over to the process of creating a little being, but we also delivered those babies and nurtured them. None of us came out of this adventure sculpted, lifted, tight, and without what I call my cat stomach. Nor do we feel rested or rejuvenated…EVER. BUT dammit ladies if you can create a human being, give birth, and nurture a little human how on earth can you not feel empowered?!

You should feel like you can do anything, because you can. Squat thrusts, running, push-ups, etc. is NOTHING compared to pregnancy and delivering a baby. Stop saying you can’t, stop making excuses. You have a short window to ride the excuse train before it turns into the pity party train. I’m not sure when being a mom became the excuse for giving up on yourself but it’s time to take the strength and power we were fortunate to witness within ourselves and build on it, run with it, run a half marathon with it. But please take the time to acknowledge it, embrace it and don’t be afraid of it. The ability to be a mom is such an amazing gift – please don’t use it as an excuse! You will only be doing yourself the hugest disservice in not acknowledging a critical part of your being.
I know being a mom is hard, frustrating, tiring, and, some days, miserable. I know there is not enough time in a day. I know the laundry is never done, the dishes are never stacked, the house is never clean and sometimes neither are the kids. You have friends you never get to see, books you’d love to read, and legs you (and your husband) would love to shave. I’m not saying it’s easy because its not! But it’s far from impossible and if anyone one can do it it’s you!

Love, Megan

DETOX Diary (Week 2)

For the first 7 days of BRIK I went without:

-Coffee
-Alcohol
-Sugar (over 9g)
-Carbs (meaning bread, pasta, etc.)
-Dairy
-Processed “foods” (or anything with ingredients I couldn’t read)

How am I feeling?? Pretty darn good! The coffee habit was the hardest to kick. I chose to do this simply because I am a full-blown caffeine addict. This week, I am allowing coffee back into my diet but only once a day, if I really want it (not need it).

The best habit I’ve formed this past week is making SMOOTHIES!! I love them! My daily smoothie is: A banana, 10 blackberries, 1/4 cup almond milk, 2 tspn. fiber powder, and a large handful of spinach. It is a great way to get in some greens and feel energized before or after a workout! Please comment with your own smoothie recipes!!

On Monday night, after a day of great eating and no coffee by choice alone, I had 2 small pieces of dark chocolate. I could make a million excuses as to why, but the point is, I caved. And within 5 minutes, my stomach was hurting! It amazes me how fast our bodies adapt to a healthy diet and how quickly it rejects something like sugar after only 8 days without it.

If you’ve “cheated”, slipped up or made an exception to your rules, don’t live in guilt. Admit it, listen to your body’s reaction and move FORWARD. Make the choice to make tomorrow a better day. We are all human!

Happy Week 2 ladies, we’re doin’ it! Please share how you’re feeling – we all need the support!

BRIK Tips!

Thank you to all 80 Kaia girls that came out for our Saturday workout! So fun!

A collection of personal tips, as well as advice from other Kaia girls, to help you through Detox, workouts, runs and daily challenges!

DETOX

- Curb late-night snacking and cravings for sweets by brushing your teeth!
- Tea is your friend! Use it for a perk-me-up, wind-down or tool to keep you away from the chocolate!
Pre-plan your weekly food intake! Shop on Sunday for the week. Take your lunch to work and snack healthy throughout the day! Water, Water, Water! (Thank you, Lisa F.!)
- Try family meal plans! Thinking ahead is key here, but trying new, healthy recipes for the whole family is a great way to detox. (Thank you, Heather D.!)

NUTRITION

- Post-detox week, stick to most of the habits you’ve just formed. Try sticking with NO carbs (processed- like bread, pasta, etc.) or allowing them just once a week. Dairy and sugar are other ones to stay away from during BRIK!
- Eat big in the morning and smaller as the day goes on. Make breakfast your biggest meal (never skip it!), then a moderate lunch and a light dinner with snacks in between!
- Fiber! We can’t say it enough, it is VITAL to digestion and weight-loss. It might make your stomach feel a little funny or even bloated when you’re first getting used to it, but stick with it! Read about the importance of fiber here.
- Make sure you’re getting enough calories! We must FUEL our bodies- shoot for 1200 calories/day. Try adding healthy protein shakes to your day for an extra boost! Elham has been enjoying Arbonne Vanilla Protein Powder.

RUNNING

- Make sure you have good shoes! They make a huge difference in endurance, injuries and soreness. Read a great article about it here!
- DO NOT SKIP SATURDAYS! Whether you’re a runner, jogger, walker or sometimes all three, really commit to Saturdays. They are a perfect end to the week, greatly improve our endurance and burn lots of calories.
- Challenge yourself. During workouts if we ask you to run around the building, take it seriously! If it’s a 100m sprint, give it your all! Every bit of running counts!
- Breathing is key. In through the nose, out through the mouth. It seems unnatural at first to breath deep and slow while you run but it really works. (Thank you, Laura C.!)

WORKOUTS

- Have fun! Remember, although we take BRIK seriously and the workouts are tough, it’s okay to have fun! Grunt, groan, laugh and don’t take yourself too seriously. Try new things, push your limits and make friends with your Kaia girls!
- Keep track of your stuff! Make sure you’re putting assessments and workout scores in your folder so you can come back to them. Writing everything down is a fun way to track progress!

Staying Healthy with H2O!!

All About Water

Staying hydrated is an important key to staying healthy, recovering quickly and feeling energized. Especially when exercising regularly, proper water intake is vital for your health.

Water regulates our body temperature, protects our vital organs and aids in digestion. We naturally lose water everyday in normal activity, more when working out. The Food and Nutrition Board suggests 91 oz. per day for women! When adding exercise, this number goes up! In one hour of exercise, the body can lose an entire quart of water!

I know that it can seem overwhelming to drink 80-100 oz. of water per day (especially when it’s cold out), so here are some tips:

  • Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning!
  • Bring a LARGE water bottle to class and make it your goal to drink it all during that hour!
  • Although drinking pure water is best, you can also get some water from tea, soups, fruits and veggies!
  • Anytime you feel hungry, drink a glass of water first!
  • Journal your water intake!

Hydration Hints:

  • Drink 17-20 ounces of water two to three hours before the start of exercise.
  • Drink 8 ounces of fluid 20 to 30 minutes prior to exercise or during warm-up.
  • Drink 7-10 ounces of fluid every 10 to 20 minutes during exercise.
  • Drink an additional 8 ounces of fluid within 30 minutes after exercising.
  • Drink 16-24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost after exercise.

In short, you should NEVER feel thirsty. Staying hydrated is essential to everything we do and will aid in recovering your sore muscles! H2O is your friend!
